In the Latino entertainment industry, there were plenty of sad, shocking and happy moments in 2014. Here's a look at 12 of the biggest things that happened this year.
1. Mónica Spear Murdered
At the beginning of the year, Mónica Spear, Miss Venezuela 2004, was killed. The beauty queen was with her ex and their daughter in Venezuela when they were attacked, CNN reported. The incident was shocking and many were upset when later in the year, organizers of the Miss Venezuela beauty pageant didn't honor Spear.
2. Marc Anthony Jokes About He and Jennifer Lopez's Love of Younger Partners
Jennifer Lopez's relationship with Casper Smart was very well documented with many noting the couple's age difference. Earlier in the year, Marc Anthony defended his ex-wife, saying he also liked younger partners.
"I like them young, too! I'm not one to judge," he said on the "The Wendy Williams Show" in a February interview.
3. Angelique Boyer and Jose Alberto Castro Confirm Split
At the beginning of the year, Angelique Boyer had been dating Jose Alberto Castro for a long time, but by March, the two had decided to go their separate ways.
The two released a joint statement, saying they wouldn't continue to talk about the split. Unfortunately, this started rumors of infidelity.
4. Ninel Conde Is Accused of Having an Abortion
In April, a supposed recording of Ninel Conde and boyfriend Giovanni Medina was released. The two were arguing, and he said he wouldn't forgive her for having an abortion, notes TV y Novelas.
This audio brought a lot of negative backlash to Conde, who gave birth later in the year.
5. People Ask for Shakira
Many were disappointed with the World Cup song, which featured Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and Claudia Leitte. At the end of May, those who were disappointed began making #VoltaWakaWaka trend on Twitter. The hashtag asked for the return of Shakira's song "Waka Waka," reported The Associated Press.
6. Selena's Family Says a Hologram Isn't Possible
In June, many Selena fans were disappointed to learn that a hologram of the late singer would not be possible.
The singer's brother, A.B. Quintanilla, said the family doesn't have good enough footage and doesn't want to use Jennifer Lopez to make it happen.
"After the meeting, when we returned to the bus, we all agreed that it wasn't enough for the fans," A.B. said, according to El Universal. "She looked like a ghost. The image was not well-defined."
7. Romeo Santos Sells Out Yankee Stadium Two Nights in a Row
Bronx native Romeo Santos performed two sold-out concerts in Yankee Stadium in July, according to El Jaya. He was joined by other superstars, such as Marc Anthony, Prince Royce and members of Aventura.
8. Shakira Confirms Pregnancy
Even before the World Cup took place, many believed Shakira was pregnant. It wasn't until August that the singer finally revealed the news to the Mexican edition of Cosmopolitan.
"Well yes, the truth is, I am pregnant," she said, according to TV y Novelas.
9. James Rodriguez Is Named Sexiest Man
In September, Colombian soccer star James Rodriguez was named the sexiest man by People En Español.
Rodriguez's wife, Daniela Ospina, was interviewed for the piece.
"He's a very attractive man," she said. "But what I most like is the way he is, his personality. It's what I really love."
10. Cristina Saralegui Returns
In October, Cristina Saralegui returned with a new book. She also opened up about being an alcoholic and struggling with her son's bipolar disorder. On "Despierta America" she made her return to Univision.
11. Chespirito Dies
Famed comedian Chespirito died in November. Throughout the year, there were plenty of rumors about his health. Many celebrities immediately took to social media to talk about how Chespirito impacted their lives.
12. Celebrities back up the Teletón
In Mexico, the Teletón was criticized by people who are hurting after missing students from Ayotzinapa were reported dead. Eugenio Derbez, who hosted the show, faced the brunt of the criticism. In the United States, the event raised more than $15 million for the Children's Rehabilitation Institute of Telethon USA.
