Christmas Eve Weather Conditions: East Coast to Get Lots of Rain
Rather than a white Christmas, it looks like this year will be a wet and soggy Christmas for much of the East Coast.
A culmination of high winds, thunderstorms and drenching rains produced by holiday storms are expected to arrive just in time for the holiday, causing travel disruptions for millions of Americans.
"It's going to be a rainmaker, for sure. There's the threat of locally heavy rain and this system could be windy enough to disrupt travel at airports in the East," The Weather Channel meteorologist Roy Lucksinger told NBC News.
Aviation forecasters at the National Weather Service predicted that New York City will be hit with a "high impact event" on Wednesday that could potentially bring heavy rain and wind gusts and cause major flight delays on Christmas Eve.
"We worry about any kind of weather when it comes to holiday travel," Weather Prediction Center meteorologist Brian Hurley said, USA Today reported. "A lot of airports will be affected. It doesn't look like we will have significant snow, but with the rain and wind, delays are imminent."
"Especially on Christmas Eve, the rain is going to be heavy enough, and there is going to be wind, so I'd think there will be some delays and a slower go than usual on the interstates," said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynowski. "Certainly not the ideal travel day."
In addition, airports in Charlotte, Atlanta, and the major Florida hubs may also be affected by high wind, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and low clouds. Meanwhile, wind, rain and thunderstorms may cause delays as far west as Cincinnati and Detroit, according to weather.com.
Only Wisconsin and northern Michigan will have a high chance of receiving a white Christmas, although Chicago may get some snow flurries, depending on the direction of the storm system.
According to NBC News, big, wet snowflakes could fall on the Chicago area on Wednesday afternoon.
There will be rain in the early morning hours of Wednesday before it transitions into snow around 8 a.m. As a result, the snow and gusty winds could cause whiteout conditions for those traveling on the holiday.
There are estimates that Chicago will recieve 2 to 5 inches of snow throughout the area.
