Grinch: Christmas Decorations Stolen in Colorado, Destroyed in Chicago
Christmas is a time for giving, sharing and loving others. However, a few Scrooges have been on the lose and popping up around the country, trying to steal the holiday spirit by stealing and vandalizing Christmas decorations.
Last Friday, police in Colorado Springs arrested a couple accused of stealing their neighbors' holiday decorations and then displaying them in their own front yard. Police brought 18-year-old Jeremy Lewallan and 42-year-old Carrie Lewallan into custody around 5 p.m.on suspicion of felony theft after they found several stolen decorations at their southeast Colorado Springs home. The pilfered goods included inflatable characters and lighted figures at their home on the 4400 block of Anjelina Circle North, in southeast Colorado Springs, police said, according to The Gazette.
Meanwhile, police in Chicago are searching for a pair of vandals who targeted a home Christmas display Sunday night in Limestone in Kankakee County.
Homeowner Kim Astle said that she and her family woke up Monday morning to discover that their giant inflatable ornaments on their front yard were purposefully deflated. Astle immediately checked the security camera positioned in the home's front window, which shows a car pulling up in front of their home and slicing both decorations around 2 a.m. Monday morning. After both were deflated, the vandal ran back into the car as the driver pulls away.
Astle then sent the disturbing footage to the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office, who then posted it to their Facebook page in hope that someone will recognize the culprits.
Initially, Astle says she tried to replace each $60 decoration, but the store was sold out. Instead, she stitched up the decorations and is hoping they will last until Christmas Day.
"Merry Christmas is about helping others and your neighbors, and this is the opposite of that," Astle told ABC 7 Chicago.
