NYPD Officers Shot and Killed: Vice President Joe Biden to Go to Queens, New York for Funeral for Rafael Ramos
Vice President Joe Biden and his wife are expected to attend the funeral of one of the two NYPD officers who were gunned down Saturday.
On Dec. 20, officers Wenjian Liu, 32, and Rafael Ramos, 40, were fatally shot as they were sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn, reports BBC News. The man charged with killing the officers, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, then took off and shot himself in a nearby subway station.
The White House released a statement announcing that Biden was asked to attend the funeral for Officer Ramos this Saturday at Christ Tabernacle Church in the Glendale, Queens, staring at 10 a.m.
"The President has asked Vice President Biden to attend the service for Officer Rafael Ramos and is grateful that the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden will be traveling to New York City to attend the service on Saturday," spokesman Eric Schultz said, according to NBC News.
Around 30,000 people, including 25,000 police officers, are also expected to be in attendance, reportsCNN.
A wake was held for Officer Ramos on Friday at the Christ Tabernacle Church, where the 40-year-old married father of two was a long time and deeply committed member.
"Ralph was definitely a family man. He always talked about his kids and how well they were doing athletically and academically," Rev. Adam Durso, executive pastor of Christ Tabernacle, said.
A funeral service for officer Wenjian Liu is pending.
Brinsley also shot his ex-girlfriend in the stomach in her Maryland home earlier that day before driving to New York City with the intent to murder police officers.
Police say Brinsley had a troubled history of violence and mental instability, along with multiple run-ins with the law,
Leading up to the shooting, the New York Police Department's Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Brinsley had posted anti-police and anti-government messages on his Instagram account in light of the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, two unarmed African American men who were killed by white cops. However, neither cop was charged in their deaths.
