Husband of NYPD Psychologist Alleges She Shot Him in Head to Avoid Messy Divorce
A NYPD psychologist allegedly shot her husband in their upscale home in Yonkers, New York, last year. The victim, 47-year-old Kenneth Dearden, said that his wife of 18 years, 46-year-old Emily Dearden, shot him in the head in order to avoid a messy divorce.
The incident occurred on Nov. 14, 2013 around 4 a.m. Kenneth says he awoke from his sleep with agonizing pain in his jaw and discovered that he had been shot. According to him, his wife began having an extramarital affair in early 2011, and her lover was pressuring her to end her marriage.
"With Plaintiff no longer in the picture, Defendant could avoid a contentious divorce, keep the marital home and never admit the marital infidelity to any family or friends," states a lawsuit that Kenneth filed against his wife two weeks before she was arrested, reports The Associated Press.
The suit also charges Emily with assault, battery and emotional distress and seeks unspecified damages.
Kenneth, a successful real estate developer, said that on the night of the shooting, he found his wife on the floor "claiming she had been hit on the head." Kenneth also alleged that after the shooting his wife called her lover before notifying his family. He also said that Emily had coffee with her lover before visiting Kenneth in the hospital.
Emily was brought into custody on attempted murder charges and then released on a $150,000 bail.
Her lawyer called the lawsuit "baseless" and said it was retaliation for her divorce filing.
"These new and outrageous allegations by Mr. Dearden, which completely contradict statements he gave the police at the time of the incident a year ago, are clearly being made by a husband who is furious that his wife has filed for divorce," attorney Paul Bergman said.
Despite the alleged affair, Kenneth and Emily continued to live together with their two daughters, even after she filed for divorce in August. In the lawsuit, the founder of DW Capital Associates and president of the Yonkers Downtown/Waterfront Business Improvement District said he lived "in fear of the possibility of another (this time successful) attack."
Emily, a Columbia University alum and former adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, has been suspended from her position with the NYPD, reports lohud. She also moved to Manhattan and was ordered to stay away from the rest of the family. Her daughters are in their father's care.
