Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Date, Specs, Price Rumors: Feb. 2014 Debut with Exynos Chip, 16MP Camera, Metal Case
It has been about six months since Samsung released the Galaxy S4. So naturally, rumors about the release date of the Samsung Galaxy S5 are already spreading like wildfire.
The latest rumor for the release date of the Galaxy S5 comes from Naver, a Korean news site run by former Samsung employees. According to the website, the Galaxy S5 will be revealed in mid-January and released in February.
How likely are these timeframes? Let us take a brief look at Samsung's Galaxy release history.
Samsung released the Galaxy S4 in April of this year. This was 11 months after the launch of the Galaxy SIII. If Samsung releases the Galaxy S5 in February, that would mean 10 months will have passed since its predecessor. Ten months between cell phone releases seems plausible considering that Samsung waited only one month longer for its last release.
Some sites believe that Samsung will showcase the Galaxy S5 during the Consumer Electronics Show in January, despite the fact that Samsung does not usually make big announcements during the event.
Naver's alleged February release date coincides with the Mobile Word Congress event which takes place in Barcelona. Samsung has had a strong presence at this event in the past, further supporting Naver's rumor.
When the smartphone is released, users can expect a 16-megapixel camera, which is three megapixels more than the Galaxy S4, but the same amount of megapixels as the Galaxy S4 Zoom. The smartphone is also rumored to contain a new optical image stabilization feature. In addition, the Samsung Exynos processor is expected to replace the Galaxy S4's Qualcomm Snapdragon chip.
"Not in the shortest time, but yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality," Shin Jong-Kyun, Samsung CEO, said when asked by The Korea Times if Samsung's future phones will run 64-bit CPUs.
The Galaxy S5 is not expected to have a fingerprint scanner like its competitor, Apple's iPhone 5s, nor will it have a plastic case like Apple's iPhone 5c. Instead, the Galaxy S5 is expected to switch to an all-metal case.
Time will reveal more about the impending release of Samsung's newest smartphone.
