Cardigan sweaters date back to the 17th century, and the simple front sweater has many uses -- not to mention its ability to also keep everyone warm.

A fresh, arctic breeze is taking over much of the nation this week. Rather than bundle up in a big ski jacket and other winter accessories, give an ensemble featuring a cardigan a try.

For the Men:

A cardigan has a classy, yet versatile look. Men can wear a sweater like this one from Macy's with a nice dress shirt underneath. A tie would be optional but could make the look even more classy. 

A cardigan with a zipper has become more fashionable than buttons as of late. Mr. Rogers used to wear some classy sweaters, but they were trendy too. Here is a nice looking zipper cardigan that is today's version of Mr. Rogers' cardigans. Land's End is selling this sweater for only $40.

For the Women:

Women can find a large variety of cardigans that fit almost any occasion. There are wool, cotton, cashmere and many other types. There are some cardigans that women can wear to casual parties and affairs.

Target has a Mossimo Ultrasoft Zipper Cardigan for just $17.98. There is a variety of colors to choose from. 

Macy's has this ruffled cardigan available in several colors for just $26.99.

Women have far more choices than men and can really liven up their wardrobes. Most men wear cardigans as a cover to their dress shirt, almost like a vest. Still, it is an extra layer for them to keep warm, during these cold winter days.
