British comedian, actor and television presenter Stephen Fry has confirmed he will marry his boyfriend, stand up comedian Elliott Spencer.

According to the BBC, the couple has known each other for a little over a year.

Although Fry likes to keep his private life to himself, he confirmed the news. Taking to Twitter, Fry, 57, confirmed he would be marrying Spencer, 27. He joked about how the news had already been leaked but is happy for the support his fans have expressed.

The couple gave formal notice at the register office in Dereham, Norfolk, BBC reports. The announcement, which is displayed in Norwich, states the wedding will take place at the Breckland Business Center.

In a statement, Fry’s assistant said he is beside himself with happiness and excitement of the prospect of marriage but did not provide more details.

"Stephen Fry is very happy and proud to say that he has set the wheels in motion for a wedding sometime in the future, but no date has been set due to a busy work schedule,” the assistant said.

Soon after the announcement became public, the news media asked Spencer’s father, Robert Spencer, what he thought about the wedding.

"We are obviously very happy. We are over the moon, that is all I want to say,” he said, according to the Telegraph.

Wearing an engagement ring, Fry spoke to reporters.

“We are both very happy,” he said reports the Daily Mail.

Fry then joked on Twitter about how reporters remained outside his door despite him telling them he had nothing else to say.

Friends credit Fry’s relationship with Spencer as a turning point for the celebrity, having lifted him out of depression and making him happy again. In 2012, Fry, who is bipolar, attempted suicide by consuming large quantities of pills and vodka but was saved by a producer who found him. The “QI” host and “The Hobbit” actor appears to have found happiness with his partner.
