Johnny Manziel could eventually become the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns next season, but Scott Petrak of Chronicle Telegram believes the team should consider trading the mercurial QB.

Petrak expects Manziel to start for the Browns next season because team executives favor the 22-year-old quarterback, who was the 22nd overall pick in last year's NFL Draft. If he is to have it his way, however, Petrak said he will not hesitate to drop Manziel.

"I would dump Manziel at the first opportunity if I were owner Jimmy Haslam and general manager Ray Farmer," Petrak wrote. "After eight months with the Browns, it's time for Johnny Football to become Johnny Waiver Wire. Or preferably, Johnny Trade Bait."

Manziel completed 18 of his 35 passes for 175 yards but has no touchdown against two interceptions in five appearances for the Browns this season. The former Texas A&M standout said it is unfair to judge him based on the seven quarters he played in his rookie year.

"If that's what they are in the business for and what they intended on me coming in here doing, just giving them seven quarters, giving them a couple of games and then looking somewhere else, I don't feel that's a lot of commitment of sticking with somebody," Manziel said via ESPN.

Petrak agrees that the Browns have limited sample size to decide on Manziel's future but said that Cleveland should not hesitate to dump Manziel because he cannot see the Texas native improving on and off the field.

"I agree with those who say six quarters as the starter isn't enough time to adequately judge Manziel, but any decision to part with Manziel -- via trade or release -- goes well beyond the small sample size on Sundays," Petrak argued. "He isn't talented enough or dedicated enough to succeed at the game's most important position."

Petrak said Manziel "looked overwhelmed" during his time as a starter for the Browns and the quarterback is not as gifted as most analysts were saying before the 2014 NFL Draft. Off the field, Manziel was also involved in several controversies. For Petrak, Manziel is not mature enough to handle the responsibility of being the face of a franchise because he lacks leadership qualities.
