A man was fatally shot by a police officer during an altercation at the Columbus, Ohio airport on Wednesday.

According to David Whitaker, Vice President of Communications for the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. after airport police were called to respond to a "disturbance" on the departure level of the north terminal, reports CNN. That's when a confrontation between the man and police officers emerged just outside the departures area of the terminal at the Port Columbus International Airport.

Whitaker stated that the officers were responding to a threat and that the man did not fire at the officer. Many other details have not been provided, including the names of the people involved in the shooting.

"There was a threat, and we were responding to that," said Whitaker, according to the Associated Press.

The officer who opened fire was not injured.

"We don't think that there's an ongoing threat at the moment," Whitaker added. "We believe the situation is contained as I've described."

"It was indeed a confrontation," Whitaker said. The man was believed to have arrived at the airport alone, but it is unknown whether he was scheduled to be on a flight. It was also not clear how long the victim had been there.

A bomb squad also searched a vehicle that was linked to the man for explosives as a precaution.

Following the shooting, the departures area was blocked off during the afternoon, but flights remained on scheduled. Departing passengers were also directed to enter through the arrivals portal.

The departures area was blocked off Wednesday afternoon, but the airport said flights were running as scheduled. Departing passengers were directed to enter through the arrivals area.

Matt Diehl of Columbus said he was waiting to board a flight around the time of the incident, but he wasn't sure if his flight would be delayed.

"I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but at this point I'm not optimistic," he said.
