According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, Facebook is quite popular among American adults.

And it's not even close.

The study indicates that 58 percent of U.S. adults use Facebook, which is far and away more popular among the same age group than other social networks like LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter.

Pew also says that while Facebook is far and away most popular with American adults, many of those same people also use multiple social networks: 52 percent of them, to be exact.

The data was collected across two periods of time: Sept. 11 - 14 of last year, and Sept. 18 - 21 of last year.

However, not all is sunny and rosy in Facebook world, Pew finds. The study also indicates that growth for the super-popular social network has grown, while the user bases of competing networks like the ones listed above are growing at much faster rates.

On the other hand, 70 percent of Facebook users interact with the social network on a daily basis, and 45 percent do so multiple times a day. Meanwhile, roughly half of Instagram's users interact with the platform daily, and that number sinks significantly lower for Pinterest users (17 percent).

It's worth noting that out of all the social networks examined in this study, Facebook has the most features, options, and activities. Facebook includes games, built-in apps, the ability to comment, share, link, like, watch videos, and much more. LinkedIn is a network that's tailored toward professionals and job-seekers, and Instagram is wholly rooted in photo browsing. Facebook also benefits from the fact that its user base doesn't skew towards one demographic or another, according to Pew's research.

Could another social network usurp Facebook's dominance and replace it as the go-to social destination on the web? Possibly. Many thought Myspace was invincible at the height of its popularity, and while Facebook is firmly entrenched in the lives of many today, there's always going to be a rival that's looking to knock the big dog off his throne.
