Paul McCartney 'New' Album 2013 Songs: Former Beatle Surprises 2,000 Fans At Covent Garden Pop-Up Concert [VIDEO]
After having a guerrilla concert in New York City's Times Square last week, Paul McCartney continues his publicity stunt to promote his latest album, "New." The classic rock icon surprised 2,000 fans by performing in the heart of London's Covent Garden.
On October 18, the former Beatle took Twitter to announce the impromptu show to be held at Covent Garden around lunchtime. "I'm getting ready to pop up in Covent Garden at 1pm today. Oh baby!" he told his 1.6 million followers.
People then started gathering in the cobbled piazza around 11 a.m., and excited crowds of people swarmed to get a spot in the packed piazza as rumors of the free gig spread across Twitter. Soon after, Covent Garden's famous piazza was packed with 2000 assembled fans to get a glimpse of the music legend.
At 1:30 p.m., the 71-year-old singer played alongside his band from the back of a truck, which formed his makeshift stage, parked on the piazza, in front of St Paul's church. McCartney greeted his fans with a simple welcome message.
"Good afternoon. Welcome to Covent Garden. We're just going to do some songs from our new album so get your phones out - as if they weren't ready."
He performed five selections from his new album "New." As the crowd was cheering, Paul McCartney opened with his current single, also called "New," and closed with the same song approximately 20 minutes later.
The singer ended the pop-up show by saying, "Thank you very much. Okay now, back to work!"
After his hit-and-run show, McCartney shared in a recent interview with BBC how he felt during the concert. "It was very exciting. It felt little bit like I was in a dream - sort of a little bit spacey," said the singer.
He also mentioned that he got the surprise concert idea from his daughter, Stella - "She said, 'what you should do is just pop up somewhere and do a gig, and everyone will just get their phones out and they'll tweet it,'" said McCartney. "And I said, 'well that's not a bad idea - however, I've now got to go and do it!'"
Paul McCartney's latest solo album "New" was released on Monday. The album features 12 tracks including "New" and "Queenie Eye," and it is his first album of new original songs in 6 years.
