Chelsea regained the top spot in the Barclays Premier League table after scoring a 2-0 win against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, while Manchester City settled for a 1-1 draw against Everton at Goodison Park.

Newcastle, who is currently in 10th place in the EPL table with 27 points in 21 matches, looked poised to score an upset after the Blues had a slow start.

However, Oscar gave Chelsea momentum heading into the break, as he netted a goal in the 43rd minute to the delight of more than 41,000 fans at Stamford Bridge. Diego Costa then gave the Blues more breathing space, as he scored in the 59th minute off a pass from Oscar.

Newcastle had several scoring chances, but Petr Cech, who started in place of injured Thibaut Courtois, held his ground, finishing with four saves in the match.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho refused to speak to the media again following the match. Though assistant manager Steve Holland said Mourinho was disappointed with the team's performance in the opening half, Chelsea is glad to have managed to regain its rhythm in the second half.

"Our performance level over the course of 31 matches has been very, very consistent but in the first half we dropped below that and Jose was very clear how he wanted them to improve and the players did that," Holland said via ESPN. "In the second half it was much more like the Chelsea we're used to seeing."

Meanwhile, like Chelsea, Manchester City also had a lackluster start on Saturday, despite the return of leading scorer Sergio Aguero from injury.

Fernandinho gave Manchester City a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute, but Steven Naismith netted a masterful header four minutes later to give Everton a 1-1 draw as City failed to hit the back of the net again.

After sharing the lead with Chelsea heading into Saturday's game day, Manchester City dropped to second spot with 47 points – two points behind the Blues but are still 10 points ahead of Manchester United.
