America Ferrera Stars as Revenge-Seeking Nun in New CBS TV Series 'Damascus'
CBS' "Damascus" will host America Ferrera's (Ugly Betty) return to television; and, believe it or not, she will be portraying a "justice-seeking" nun who "practices law on the behalf of the less fortunate," and probably on the behalf of God.
Ferrera has spent the last few years voice-acting, producing and appearing in films. Since the finale of Ugly Betty, which aired on August 2010, she's voiced Astrid Hofferson in How to Train Your Dragon (and will again in the two upcoming sequels), portrayed Hedy Galili in the indie black comedy It's a Disaster, Officer Orozco in End of Watch, Helen Chavez in the Cesar Chavez biopic Chavez, Silvia in X/Y, and she's currently voicing the character Astrid Hofferson on Dragons: Riders of Berk. She also played the title role on a web series, Christine. The three-year screen absence now over, Ferrera will swap Betty's braces for the feisty nun's habit.
Deadline described the series, stating, "Damascus is the story of a crusading nun (Ferrera) who practices law on behalf of the least fortunate, and has her beliefs tested when her life collides with an elitist corporate lawyer. As the two set out to help those in need of justice, they come up against a secretive and powerful organization that is determined to destroy them."
Damascus was bid on by multiple networks, and landed in CBS' lap. Ferrera will executive produce the project, along with Ugly Betty executive producer Teri Weinberg. Nick Osborne (Remember Me, License to Wed) is expected to write the pilot for the series.
