The 2015 Detroit Auto Show introduced a new electric car to the American auto market. Although not available to customers until a year or two from now, Chevrolet’s new Bolt continues to expand the electric car market in the U.S.

Chevrolet and General Motors showcased the new Bolt on Twitter, showing a photo of the orange concept car that is the basis of the upcoming electric car.

According to the Detroit News, GM unveiled the new Chevrolet Bolt at the Detroit Auto Show. Priced at $30,000 after a $7,500 federal tax rebate, the Bolt could bring electric cars to a wider group of people.

GM CEO Mary Barra, however, did not say when the car would go into production. She did say it would be sold in the U.S. and “select global markets.”

"We're pretty convinced that this is the right vehicle at the right time. We've got this pretty much nailed down and we know how to do it. We would not have today come here and talked about 200 miles and $30,000 if we didn't really know how to make that happen,” Alan S. Batey, GM North America president, said, though he also did not provide details.

The car’s $30,000 price tag as well as its 200 mile range will open up the electric car market to more consumers, as Tesla, the only mass producer of electric cars in the U.S., has cars with luxury car price tags.

“Chevrolet believes electrification is a pillar of future transportation and needs to be affordable for a wider segment of customers,” Barra said, reports the New York Daily News.

The Bolt will seat four people and is composed of lightweight aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber. It also has glass on the roof and a wrap-around back window. The car’s aerodynamic design and lightweight materials will save on energy when driving.
