'The Lego Movie 2' Release Date: Chris Pratt Explains Deep Meaning Behind 'Everything Is Awesome' Song Amid Academy Awards 2015 Nomination
Since its theatrical release in February 2014, the critical and commercial success of "The Lego Movie," the computer-animated adventure fantasy comedy film directed and co-written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has been hailed as one of the best films of the year. It's song "Everything Is Awesome" is now getting some attention of it's own thanks to its Oscar nomination.
The movie's theme song, "Everything Is Awesome," was completely snubbed at the Golden Globes and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song meaning it could beat out Selma's theme song, "Glory" by Common and John Legend.
Chris Pratt, who voiced "The Lego Movie's" lead character, agreed the clever song warrants Oscar gold, joking that he has "a padded cell in [his] brain for it."
"Well, I think it follows the theme of this movie, which you think is just some Lego movie made to sell toys -- and it's actually a really subversive, interesting, thought-provoking commentary on society," Pratt toldVulture at a Lego-themed rendezvous. "The song itself represents that because it's saying that everything is awesome, but it's the anthem of this strange world that exists halfway between America and North Korea, you know what I mean? Twenty or 30 years from now, I think people will look back at 'Everything Is Awesome,' and it'll be more than just a cool pop song. It's really reflective of where we are right now, and that's what art is all about."
Pratt enjoyed a banner year in 2014 by voicing everyman and construction worker Emmet Brickowski for "The Lego Movie" and starring as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in the record-breaking Marvel space odyssey "Guardians of the Galaxy." He has since been ranked as #2 on People magazine's annual list of Sexiest Men Alive list and will star in the much-anticipated "Jurassic World," the fourth installment of Steven Spielberg's monster movie adventure film "Jurassic Park."
"The Lego Movie" co-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller confirmed a sequel to their applauded film is slated for a 2018 release, with Lord noting the inclusion on the Oscar broadcast in Feb. 22 would have meant an excellent performance.
"If they perform it on the show, it will be so fun to see Tegan and Sara, the Lonely Island, and Mark Mothersbaugh," Lord said. "And I'm hoping Batman will do a little surprise cameo! That alone is reason enough."
The song's writer, Shawn Patterson, says the stakes should be higher if it were to be performed at this year's Oscars.
"My original idea was that we should have the greatest musicians and singers in the world perform it," he said. "Yo-Yo Ma should do a solo! Meryl Streep should sing! Ice-T should do the rap! Everything about the song is sort of gloriously unglorious, so to have someone really grand belting it out -- I think that's the way to go."
The computer animated adventure comedy film became the first film produced by Warner Animation Group, and is an international co-production of the United States, Australia, and Denmark. If the film takes home Oscar gold next month, "The Lego Movie" will be the first win for that studio. The first award in that category was given in 2001, with Pixar Animation Studios taking home seven awards since its inauguration. Since 2014, 54 films have been nominated.
Meanwhile, "The Lego Movie" was tapped as a contestant for the 68th BAFTA Awards for Best Animated Film alongside Disney/Marvel's "Big Hero 6" and Laika's "The Boxtrolls," on Feb. 8. However, critics still believe it is the top contender despite an Oscar snub.
