Australian Open 2015 Day 1 Preview, Live Stream & Schedule: Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova to Open Campaign
The first Grand Slam event of the year will kick off Sunday, and superstars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will see action in Day One of the 2015 Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia.
Nadal will look to bounce back from a disappointing season last year, and he will have the chance to prove his doubters wrong when he takes on Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the third match of the first session at Rod Laver Arena that is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. EST.
The 14-time Grand Slam champion was slowed down by a multitude of injuries last season and has also struggled to regain his rhythm during his brief stint in Abu Dhabi and Doha earlier this month.
Nadal, who finished second to Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in last year's Australian Open, will be heavily favored heading into his showdown against Youzhny. But as he goes deep into the tournament, Nadal admitted it will be tough for him and conceded he should not be among the favorites to win the title this year.
"I don't consider myself one of the favorites here," said Nadal, who underwent appendectomy in November last year. "Last year, yes. This year is a different story. Would be lying if I say I feel that I am ready to win today. I don't feel myself ready to win the tournament here."
Federer, who is looking to win his fifth Australian Open title, will kick of his campaign against Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei on Monday, 3 a.m. EST, at Rod Laver Arena.
Federer has been on a roll recently, winning the 2015 Brisbane International, where he also recorded the 1,000th victory of his illustrious tennis career.
The 17-time Grand Slam Champion, whose last Australian Open title came in 2010 when he defeated Andy Murray in the final, is confident heading into the tournament, saying that he has been serving well as of late.
"I think I'm serving more consistent and stronger than I ever have," Federer said in a press conference. "That's my opinion. I definitely think the racquet has helped me with that as well, a little bit. But, you know, my concentration I do believe is there, better than it's ever been."
Following the Federer-Lu match, women's second seed Maria Sharapova of Russia will also start her campaign in Melbourne when she takes on Petra Martic of Croatia.
