A Tesla Model S P85D and a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat with a high-powered Hemi V-8 competed in the traditional quarter-mile drag race Sunday at Palm Beach International Raceway, and the Tesla won.

Not only did the Tesla P85D win against the Challenger, but it also set a new world record for the fastest-accelerating electric car, reports Green Car Reports. The winning car had a quarter-mile time of 11.6 seconds and a speed through the finish time of 114.6 mph.

It was an odd-looking standoff. The five-seat luxury Tesla sedan with four doors and a hatchback did not look imposing in its lane next to the beefy muscle-car Challenger coupe with two doors and a trunk.

Nonetheless, the two cars were fairly matched on horsepower, with the P85D output of 691 from both front and rear electric motors and the Hemi-engine Hellcat with at least 707 hp.

Some experts say the electric luxury car beat the gasoline muscle car because all four of its wheels are powered and its drive-control software maximizes the total torque delivered to each wheel without loss of traction.

Not everyone agrees, however.

Car Throttle reports the Hellcat lost the drag race because too much power went through its rear wheels, and the driver was not experienced enough to handle it.

In early December, the Tesla P85D beat a Ferrari in a drag race down a stretch of Florida highway. In fairness, the Ferrari was an older model-either a 550 or 575M Maranello. The Tesla P85D can out accelerate the Lamborghini Aventador up to a reasonable speed as well.

The P85D currently sold to consumers is electronically limited to 130 mph. In the near future, Tesla Motors will offer an upgrade free of charge to enable a 155 mph top speed. The free upgrade will be available for the lifetime of the car, even if there are multiple owners.
