State of the Union Address Speech: Michelle Obama Wears Michael Kors at State of the Union Address
Not all eyes were on President Obama during last night's State of the Union address as fashion writers across the globe took note that his wife, Michelle Obama, opted to wear a Michael Kors suit for the event.
The New York Observer, for example, noted the "waist-cinching, architectural, monochromatic suit" the first lady sported on the House chamber's balcony marked "an update of a classic '50s silhouette."
Obama's outfit is part of the designer's fall and winter 2013 collection, though the 51-year-old apparently wore what the publication called a "streamlined version." The first lady's jacket, in fact, was available for purchase at Neiman Marcus until Wednesday morning, when the discounted item sold out; its price tag had been $797, down from $1,595.
"(Though) the first lady definitely knows how to rock an elegant gown ... the skirt suit was the perfect outfit for her husband's address," Hollywood Life judged. "She looked like a powerful and classy lady who represented America and her husband well," the site added.
The suit's designer, Michael Kors, is a 55-year-old New Yorker whose womenswear line has been sold at Bloomingdale's, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue. A graduate of the city's Fashion Institute of Technology, Kors reached pop-icon status when he was referenced in David Frankel's film adaption of "The Devil Wears Prada."
Mrs. Obama, meanwhile, has been known to be fond of Kors' designs. In 2009, she selected to wear his black, sleeveless dress in her first official portrait as first lady. Four years later, she also wore a Michael Kors number for during her husband's second inaugural reception, Hollywood Life detailed.
With the president insisting during his address that the United States had made a full comeback from the financial crisis that rocked the beginning of his presidency, Michelle Obama subtly underlined that message by going "all-American," New York magazine suggested. Last year, the first lady had opted for an outfit designed by Azzedine Alaia, a Tunisian-born couturier who lives in Paris.
