What an NBA season it has been so far.

Basketball fans have witnessed a lot of great performances from the point guard position this season. Notables such as Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry, Rajon Rondo and Ty Lawson have led the way as usual. But, in the nation's capital, John Wall has been guiding the Washington Wizards to a 29-14 record this season.

Wall is one of the frontrunners for league MVP so far.

This season Wall is averaging a league high 10 assists per game this year. Wall has always been a fantastic distributor of the basketball, having been the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2010 out of Kentucky. This marks the third consecutive season that Wall has increased his assist average per game mark. Despite not having an elite scorer on the team to pass to, Wall still accumulates great passing statistics.

Wall is also the leading scorer on the Wizards thus far averaging 17 points per game. Wall isn't the next Magic Johnson, but he has shown to be dual threat point guard who can beat teams scoring and passing. Perhaps the best and most underrated attribute of Wall's greatness is his defense. In a league that doesn't stress nearly the amount of pressure it used to on point guards defensively, Wall knows how to stand out.

Wall is frequently compared to Seattle Supersonics great Gary Payton. Payton was remembered for playing terrific defense against talented players, even Michael Jordan in the 1996 NBA Finals.

The Wizards are presently in second place in the Eastern Conference behind only the Atlanta Hawks. Wall has been by far the best point guard in the East this year, but many others in the Western Conference still want that title.

Los Angeles Clippers Chris Paul III is usually referred to as the best point guard because of his unbelievable passing skills. Paul has led the NBA in assists three times, drawing similar comparisons to former Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton. "CP3" is averaging 9.6 assists per game this year, and the Clippers are currently in sixth place in the West with 28 victories. Rajon Rondo is also a prototypical point guard who has elite passing skills. Rondo's biggest weakness is his poor free throw shooting.

An argument could definitely be made for Russell Westbrook. Westbrook is without a doubt the most dynamic point guard in the game today. No other point guard can attack the basket and score at will like Westbrook can. The arguments against Westbrook are his teammates and playing style. Westbrook does benefit from playing alongside the best scorer in the NBA, Kevin Durant. And, Westbrook can play reckless at times. Despite being a point guard, Westbrook is averaging four more shots per game this year than Durant, having many believe he shoots too often.

Both Westbrook and Durant are averaging an outstanding 25 points per game this season.

Stephen Curry has been the leading MVP candidate for the majority of the season. With incredible three point shooting (third most in the NBA) Curry is tough for defenders to stop because his passing continues to improve. Not only is Curry a sniper from the perimeter, but he is also averaging 8.1 assists per game. Curry and Wall each lead the NBA in steals this season.

In the end it's up to you to decide on the best point guard in the NBA. Wall and Curry and have been extremely balanced, but Westbrook can dominate a game unlike any other point guard. If consistency year in and year out is what you want, Paul may be the choice for you.
