On Feb. 13, Focus Features will be released one of the most anticipated films of the year, "Fifty Shades of Grey."

The movie is based on the popular series by E.L James and has been hyped for the past year ever since the movie was announced. With less than three weeks away from its release there is anticipation that movie will be a major hit at the box office. From early predictions the movie is currently becoming the fastest selling R-rated film on Fandango and according to boxoffice.com, it is currently on track to making $61 million opening weekend.

That would make it the sixth highest opening for an R-rated film behind "The Matrix Reloaded," "American Sniper," "The Hangover Part II," "The Passion of the Christ" and "300." The opening weekend will likely be helped by the fact that it opens over a four-day weekend and also opens during Valentine's Day, a time when couples usually go to the movies. Focus Features has also been marketing the film aggressively using music from Beyonce in the trailers to premiering the trailers during TV shows. The company has also featured a number of posters that resemble the original book covers. Additionally the company also opted for an R-rating even though some of the content was explicit and merited an NC-17 rating. These factors could definitely increase the projected opening and it may also have a chance at breaking records.

The current record holder for a February release is "The Passion of the Christ" and while "Fifty Shades of Grey" is unlikely to reach the $83 million that film opened with, it could very likely become the third best opening for a February release.

It could however break the four-day president's weekend record, which is currently held by "Valentine's Day." That movie grossed $63 million in four days. "Fifty Shades of Grey" is tracking less than that opening but the number could go up as enthusiasm grows.

However, "Fifty Shades of Grey" does have competition that weekend as "Kingsman: The Secret Service" will open on the same day. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine and Taron Egerton. Fox has been marketing the film strongly and it could detract male audiences away from the erotic thriller. Currently, the film is tracking to open with $20 million and that number could very well go up as the date gets closer and the studio continues to push the film.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" tells the story of literature student Anastasia Steele whose life changes forever when she meets handsome, yet tormented, billionaire Christian Grey. The film stars newcomers Jaime Dornan and Dakota Johnson as well as Jennifer Ehle, Marica Gay Harden and Luke Grimes.

The movie was directed by Sam Taylor Johnson ("Nowhere Boy") and was written by Kelly Marcel ("Saving Mr. Banks."). Seamus McGarvey served as cinematographer while Danny Elfman wrote the score for the film. The film was produced by Michael De Luca ("Moneyball," "Magnolia"), Dana Brunetti ("The Social Network," "Captain Phillips") and the author E.L James.
