Michael Brown Shooting Update: Former Ferguson Cop Darren Wilson to Be Cleared on Federal Charges
Sources say that federal civil-rights charges will not be filed against former Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager who died in Ferguson, Missouri last August.
Law enforcement officials say that a federal investigation launched into Brown's death lacked sufficient evidence to charge Wilson for depriving Brown of his civil rights, reports the New York Post. As a result, this would mark the second time that Wilson was cleared on criminal charges and avoided standing trial in the shooting death of the 18-year-old student. In November, a St. Louis grand jury also failed to indict Wilson, leading to national protests calling for justice for Brown.
The FBI reportedly came to this decision after interviewing over 200 people and examining the same evidence as the grand jury. Based on that probe, prosecutors with the Justice Department are not likely to recommend civil rights charges against Wilson, a U.S. official told CNN.
The final decision on whether to press federal charges against Wilson will come from Attorney General Eric Holder, who is expected to drop the case.
Last month, the Justice Department released an autopsy that stated that Brown suffered from "severe injuries of the skull, brain and right chest" and appeared to have been shot in the hand at close range, reports NBC News. "The manner of death is homicide," the Justice Department's medical examiner ruled.
In addition to the Justice Department's autopsy, the St. Louis Prosecutor's office also released witness interviews with federal officials and a number of audio recordings of police transmissions leading up to and following the deadly shooting.
The fatal shooting occurred after Brown and Wilson got in some type of confrontation. Several eye witnesses testify that the black teenager was shot execution style by Officer Wilson while he was surrendering with his hands in the air. However, the white cop said that Brown was the aggressor and reached for his weapon.
