City officials in Newtown, Connecticut, have voted to demolish the home where Sandy Hook Elementary School killer Adam Lanza resided when he carried out the deadly 2012 shooting.

The Newtown Legislative Council earlier this week unanimously approved the proposal, calling for the 3,100-square-foot home to be immediately razed and left as an open space, The Associated Press reports. The home was previously gifted to the town by an area bank after being acquired from the family.

"Not only is the property a constant reminder of the evil that resided there -- those of us who walk, run, drive, ride or otherwise must pass it multiple times a day are having a hard time moving on," neighbor Dave Ackart wrote to council members.

Ian and Nicole Hockley, whose 6-year-old son, Dylan, died in the shooting, said they moved out of the neighborhood because seeing that house was too painful.

Estimates place the cost of demolition somewhere in the neighborhood of $27,000. Legislative Council member Phillip Carroll said a Sandy Hook fundraiser that brought in $1.2 million still has about $260,000 left, and some of those funds might be used to offset the cost.

The Lanza family moved from southern New Hampshire and bought the new house in 1998. It has been sitting vacant since the shooting. Reportedly the home has already been completely gutted with everything from rugs to lighting fixtures having been destroyed to make certain none of it could be memorabilia

The disturbed Lanza had walked into the elementary school on Dec. 14, 2012, and savagely massacred 20 first-graders and six educators before turning the gun on himself. Prior to sneaking into the school, the 20-year-old shooter also shot and killed his mother in their home.
