Customers Invited to Test Dish's Sling TV, Satellite Dish Company's Streaming Video Service
Consumers can access Dish's Sling TV on Tuesday and start subscribing to live, traditional cable TV content for $20 a month, reports TechCrunch.
Dish hopes affordable Sling TV will attract consumers who won't pay for large cable TV packages or have broadband-only households.
One major selling point is access to ESPN through the service -- a channel which previously was not available to streaming video users. Sling TV also offers popular cable channels in its lineup, such as Food Network, TBS, HGTV, TNT, DIY and CNN, which particular niche audiences could find appealing.
For subscribers who want more choices when it comes to news or children's shows, Sling TV offers bonus packs of channels for $5 a month in each category. An expanded tier of sports channels are coming soon at the same price.
At launch, Sling TV will have Maker Studios videos plus live channels from traditional TV networks. There will also be a good selection of TV shows and video-on-demand movies that users can buy.
To make the service accessible and user-friendly, Sling TV has introduced mobile apps for the iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets. Apps for the Roku 3, the Amazon Fire TV Stick and Amazon Fire TV will also be available so viewers can stream live cable networks to their TVs.
The streaming video subscription service was announced earlier this month at CES, and as of Tuesday at midnight Dish will send out invites to users who pre-registered for it at Sling.com. Invites will be continuously sent as interest in the service increases and the company prepares for a market launch.
What to Expect From Sling TV
Users of Sling TV can choose from a selection of live video channels based on categories, like news, sports, family and entertainment. Simply flip between the categories to change what you're watching.
Consumers will need a Roku 3, Amazon Fire TV Stick or Amazon Fire TV to get the optimized Sling TV experience for TV screens.
The company is offering a one-week free trial for consumers who'd like to test out the service before committing to it.
Frugal consumers will like that Sling TV has no contracts and installation costs. Subscribers can cancel at any time.
