New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks: 10 X-Factors to Watch For in 2015 Super Bowl
The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will duel it out in the final game of the NFL season.
We all know about the two prolific quarterbacks, the "Legion of Boom" defense, and Marshawn Lynch. But, we must also keep in mind the "other guys" who helped guide their teams to a conference championship.
Here are 10 X factors that could determine this year's Super Bowl:
1. Shane Vereen
Much of the Patriots' passing game will focus on Brandon LaFell, Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, and rightfully so. But running back Shane Vereen is a versatile back who can catch passes out of the back field very well. As a matter of fact, Vereen had 447 receiving yards and just 391 rushing yards this season. With the elite Seahawks' secondary focusing so much on LaFell, Gronkowski and Edelman, Vereen could be Brady's best friend.
2. Brandon Browner
Brandon Browner isn't a "lockdown corner," but he's a valuable asset to this team. With Darrelle Revis playing one on one against the Seahawks' best wide receiver (Doug Baldwin), Browner can try his best against the Seahawks' next best option. Browner is a physical corner, who sometime gets called for quite a bit of penalties. Browner played three seasons (including last year) with the Seahawks. Wonder if he remembers anything about his former squad.
3. Russell Wilson's Mobility
Wilson has shown time and time again he can make plays with his arm when it matters most. But, if you're going to beat the Seahawks, you have to contain Wilson's feet. Wilson had an amazing 849 rushing yards this season, the 16th most in the NFL. It's hard enough to stop Lynch. If Wilson isn't pressured by the Patriots defense, that will create a lot of Wilson rushing first downs.
4. Tim Wright
Tim Wright was acquired before the season from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he has shown flashes. Although Wright has just 26 catches all season, he has found the end zone. Wright has six receiving touchdowns this season. Think about that for a second: Almost a quarter of the time Wright touches the ball, it's a touchdown. Most likely Kam Chancellor will look to take Gronkowski out of the game, so we may see Bill Belichick implement the two tight end system, like we saw with Aaron Hernandez.
5. Jermaine Kearse
Russell Wilson doesn't have the most dynamic set of receivers to throw, especially without Golden Tate and Sidney Rice, but he has a great connection with tight end Jermaine Kearse. Kearse had a career high 537 receiving yards this season, and he had the game-winning touchdown in the NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers in overtime. The Patriots secondary will focus mostly on Doug Baldwin, so Kearse has to grab a lot of catches underneath for critical first downs.
6. Bobby Wagner
The Seahawks elite defense is ranked No. 1 in a lot of categories, mostly in the pass defensive. If linebacker Bobby Wagner can dominate the middle of the field like he's capable of, the Seahawks defense is basically unbeatable. Wagner is a sure tackler who can be found anywhere on the field in any situation, and he can force turnovers.
7. Pete Carroll Trickery
The Packers saw at firsthand what it's like to get tricked by head coach Pete Carroll. The NFC Championship game completely turned around after the fake field goal that went for a touchdown. Carroll has been well-known for his trick plays in the past going back to his USC days. Wonder if we'll see an onside kick or a fake field goal in the Super Bowl.
8. Patriots Secondary
The primary focus of the Patriots defense will obviously be Marshawn Lynch, but the Patriots pass defense has to play great. Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner, Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung may not be the "Legion of Boom," but they've had their moments. Stacking the box to stop Lynch could hurt the Patriots secondary if they overload. The Patriots pass defense ranked 17th in the league during the regular season.
9. Crowd Noise
This is an interesting one. Seattle has the 12th man behind their backs, and last year it worked to perfection. At the 2014 Super Bowl, MetLife Stadium felt like Century Link Field against the Denver Broncos. On the other side, with the game being in Glendale, Arizona, will Cardinals fans root against their NFC West rival? Only time will tell which team has more support, but if one side is overwhelming, it could spell bad news for the opposing offense.
10. Danny Amendola
It took a while, but Danny Amendola has been playing great football lately for the Patriots. Usually hindered by terrible injuries, Amendola has been relatively healthy in the second half of the season. In the divisional round, against the Baltimore Ravens, Amendola scored the game-tying 51-yard touchdown catch, his second of the game. Amendola has always been a talented player when healthy, and we may see him make a difference in special teams as well.
