On Monday, Drake played a preview for "Trophies" during a Brooklyn concert. The Hit Boy-produced song, however, does not appear on Nothing Was the Same. Recently, Drake explained why "Trophies" was left on the shelf.

"Trophies" was highly anticipated before Nothing Was the Same was dropped, making it strange that the single did not make it on to Drake's third studio album.

The song turned heads when it played in a trailer for Nothing Was the Same that was released early September.

Then on Sept. 20, Drake uploaded a throwback photo onto his Instagram page that read, "Wait...Drake still has more songs to drop??" The caption to the photo said "Wait on it. @hitboy87"

Even Hit Boy himself hinted at the song before Drake's album release.

"Drake told me sumn crazy today. All these things goin dine.... OVOHS87," Hit Boy said via his Twitter page, adding a trophy emoticon at the end of the tweet.

When Nothing was the Same came out on Sept. 24, however, there was no song with Hit Boy. What happened?

"I wouldn't even call it a left-over," Drake told Revolt TV. "It was definitely on the album. I know Hit-Boy's gonna see this and be like 'pffft,' it was definitely on the album."

Drizzy wanted "Trophies" to be perfect before it was released.

"I'm not a 'just throw it together' kind of guy, and I had two different hooks on there," Drake said. "I didn't like either of them. I started sending it around, and as great of a job as other people did, it didn't sound right if I wasn't on the hook. I always want to do my own hooks for the sake of my performances. I don't like being off a hook 'cause then I can't really give you a moment if someone else is doing the hook."

"Trophies" will get its time to shine; Drake said it will be released soon, in addition to other material that did not make the cut for Nothing Was the Same.

"I'ma drop 'Trophies' though. I'ma finish it up and drop 'Trophies,'" Drake said. "We got some stuff we did for the Aaliyah album that's crazy. I got a record with YG that's crazy. The "Wu-Tang Forever" remix is sitting there, just waiting."
