Virtual Reality on an Airplane: Qantas to Test Program for First Class Passengers
Long flights can get awfully boring. Imagine if you could give yourself an escape to an outside world through virtual reality.
Qantas airlines wants to offer virtual reality to its passengers and will test out a program in March with Samsung VR Headsets, according to a press release from Qantas.
First class passengers will get the first taste of the program on select flights between Australia and Los Angeles aboard Airbus A380 planes, USAToday reported.
The headsets will also be offered in first class lounges at the Sydney and Melbourne airports starting in the middle of February.
Qantas says they will be the only airline to offer a virtual reality experience to passengers in the air.
The airline plans to show various clips on the virtual reality headsets from movies to tours of destinations the passenger is headed to. Passengers can even experience a Qantas airline landing from a first-person view.
Whether the user wants a virtual tour of our new Los Angeles First Lounge or experience an A380 landing from the tarmac, this technology gives us a completely new way to connect with our customers," said Olivia Wirth, executive of brand, marketing and corporate affairs at Qantas.
"From an inflight entertainment perspective, it's an industry first. Qantas is committed to being at the forefront of innovation to give our passengers the very best and latest in-flight experiences, like accessing the virtual worlds of their favourite Hollywood blockbusters from the comfort of their seat 40,000 feet above the ground."
Samsung is proud of Qantas' choice to use their headsets aboard their planes.
"We believe Samsung Gear VR, one of the latest innovations from Samsung, will open new worlds for Qantas customers who experience the technology for themselves," Chief Marketing Officer for Samsung Arno Lenior said.
Qantas said the test program will last about three months.
