PBS 'Downton Abbey' Season 6 Cast and Series Finale News: Joanne Froggatt, Edith Carmichael & Allen Reportedly Discussing New Roles Because TV Show Is Ending
Rumors continue to swirl that the popular British costume drama "Downton Abbey" will be ending soon. If they are true, then fans will be sad to know they only have one more season of the British drama.
Daily Mirror recently claimed "Downton Abbey" will end after Season 6. The popular ITV show may come to an end as creator Julian Fellowes begins working on his new show "The Gilded Age."
"It's an open secret that 'Downton' is ending this year," a source said. "Some of the actors are keen to let it be known they will be available for work after the summer. Some are interested in the U.S., where 'Downton' is as popular as it is in the U.K. Joanne Froggatt, Edith Carmichael and Allen Leech were in Los Angeles for the awards last week, and there were several meetings about both TV and film roles."
ITV has already begun the search for the show to replace "Downton Abbey," according to sources, but the network continues to be mum on the subject, focusing instead on the new "Downton Abbey" season. The season begins filming in the spring and will be completed for a September release in the U.K.
According to Variety, rumors began to swirl when NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt announced "The Gilded Age" had begun to move forward. Fellowes had said earlier he would not work on the NBC series until "Downton Abbey" was finished.
"I think he's at a point now where he's able to start developing and writing our new show," Greenblatt said. "Hopefully this show will be coming to life sometime in the next season."
However, ITV executive producer Gareth Neame, who produces "Downton," has responded to the rumors.
"We plan the show from year to year, and right now I just want the cameras rolling next month," he told Variety. "If I had a dollar for every time, every day this comes up. We are entirely focused on Season 6 right now, and getting scripts ready for production in a couple of weeks."
Whether "Downton Abbey" is nearing its end or not is too soon to tell, but if it does end next season, hopefully fans have some closure.
