Texas School & Education News: Kermit Elementary School Reportedly Suspends Boy Over 'Lord of the Rings' Terrorist Threat
Anyone who has seen Peter Jackson's film versions of "The Lord of the Rings" remembers that J.R.R. Tolkien's famous piece of jewelry can be a bit spooky. But a 9-year-old Texas boy recently found out that invoking the "ring" could also get him suspended from school, Fox News reported.
Aiden Steward told a classmate he could make him disappear with the ring from Mount Doom, school officials at Kermit Elementary School said. They reportedly suspended the fourth-grader for making a terrorist threat.
But Aiden's father, Jason Steward, told the New York Daily News his son had merely been inspired by the fictional Middle Earth volcano when the family watched "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies" days earlier.
"I assure you my son lacks the magical powers necessary to threaten his friend's existence," Stewart wrote. "If he did, I'm sure he'd bring him right back."
Kermit Principal Roxanne Greer told the Odessa American that she could not comment on Aiden's suspension because of confidentiality policies. The school, however, promised Jason Steward to explain the reasoning behind the disciplinary action in writing.
It is not the first time the boy has gotten in trouble since he started attending Kermit Elementary in August: He had been issued an in-school suspension for referring to another student's skin color and was also chided for carrying a children's book to school.
"He loves that book," Jason Steward said. "They were studying the solar system and he took it to school. He thought his teacher would be impressed."
But, "The Big Book of Knowledge," a children's encyclopedia, included a section on pregnancy that depicted a pregnant woman in an illustration, something educators apparently did not appreciate.
Still, the most baffling incident remains the "Lord of the Rings" suspension, Aiden's father said.
"It sounded unbelievable. (Aiden) didn't mean anything by it," he said. "Kids act out movies that they see. When I watched Superman as a kid, I went outside and tried to fly."
