Sam Smith has premiered the official music video for the latest single "Lay Me Down" off his debut studio album "In the Lonely Hour."

Directed by Ryan Hope, the visual starts off in a church, where a funeral is taking place. The British artist stands in the middle of the aisle with mourners gathered around him holding candles.

The video continues to take Smith to various moments of his possible future, including a joyful wedding with his husband-to-be.

The British artist took to his social media accounts on Thursday to explain that the moving visual was intended to "make a statement," clearly supporting same-sex marriage:

The music video finally ends with Smith sitting alone back in the church, wearing his regular clothes -- which serves as a harsh reminder that gay marriage is still not accepted today.

"Obviously gay marriage isn't legal in churches, and we're doing a gay marriage today, in the church. We're the first ever to do it," Smith told Rolling Stone on the set of his "Lay Me Down" music video. "It's obviously not a real marriage, but still. The priest just said to us, 'We're going against the rules by doing this today,' which I thought was a lovely element in the video. We have so far to go with all of these things," he added. "So people need to stop resting and thinking, 'It's all good. We don't need to work anymore' and start protesting again."

Meanwhile, Smith has been nominated for Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Don't miss his live Grammy performance with Mary J. Blige on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
