Soccer Team Owner and Drug Lord in Honduras Turns in Himself in
A leader of one of the largest drug trafficking organizations in Honduras turned himself in last week at the United States Embassy in Tegucigalpa, according to Tiempo.
Javier "Cachiro" Rivera Maradiaga, the alleged leader of Cachiros, is most likely to cooperate with U.S. authorities in trying to get a lighter prison sentence by giving information on other criminal actors.
Reports say Cachiros has connections with political and business elites in Honduras on a local and national level. The drug group also owns a mining business and soccer team.
Despite pressure from the United States, officials in Honduras have shown little support in going after Cachiros, and they are not involved in Rivera Maradiaga's arrest.
The drug lord appeared in the Southern District Court of Florida on Jan. 26 and pleaded not guilty to charges of drug-trafficking.
An indictment from 2008 to 2013 was unsealed during his arrest, which shows Rivera Maradiaga was in charge of distributing at least five kilograms of a Schedule II controlled substance that contained cocaine.
The indictment states he knew the substance was intended to enter the United States illegally.
Rivera Maradiaga and his brother Devis Leonel were named the leaders of Cachiros by the U.S. Treasury Department. Honduran authorities seized up to $800 million in properties owned by the drug organization.
Investigations say there is a link between the Cachiros and Colombian drug trafficking groups and the Mexican Cartel.
The United States has been working closely with the Honduran government to improve the security issue in the most violent Latin American country.
Numerous high-profile drug traffickers have been captured in the past year as a result of U.S. conducted joint operations with Honduran officials.
If Rivera Maradiaga talks about his ties with political officials in Honduras, it may jeopardize the country's security assistance programs by the U.S.
