Agent Jorge Mendes announced that David de Gea is currently talking to Manchester United about a new deal that would extend the goalkeeper's stint at Old Trafford.

De Gea, who moved to Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, is being linked to a possible return to Spain as Real Madrid have reportedly expressed strong interest in acquiring the goalkeeper.

Real Madrid are reportedly trying to arrange a transfer agreement with Manchester United or just wait for De Gea to hit the market once his contract expires after next season.

However, Mendes played down all speculations about his client. The agent insisted that talks about a move to Real Madrid are premature at this point because they are currently negotiating a new deal with Manchester United.

"It's not true that the deal is done," Mendes said in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena Ser via Eurosport, referring to rumors that the De Gea-to-Real transfer is final. "I am negotiating his contract renewal but we haven't signing anything yet. As of the moment, we will see what happens. We're holding talks and at this moment it seems he could continue with United."

Last week, Mendes also told reporters that he believes De Gea is very open to signing a new deal with Manchester United because he loves playing at Old Trafford.

"He has one year left on his contract and I think that he will stay in Manchester," Mendes said via ESPN FC. "The player will decide, but he's happy there, at the moment."

Talks about De Gea's move to Real Madrid started when Manchester United expressed strong interest in acquiring superstar Gareth Bale. Real Madrid are reportedly open to moving Bale, but want De Gea in return.

Real Madrid are reportedly determined to acquire De Gea because of the impending exit of Iker Casillas. Club executives also want to make sure that Spain's top goalkeeper is from their club.

De Gea will reportedly be named as the Spain national soccer team's No. 1 goalkeeper, which is allegedly the reason why Real Madrid are pursuing the 24-year-old.

De Gea has been playing well for the Red Devils this season, tallying 85 saves in 31 appearances in all competitions. In 24 Barclays Premier League games, the Spain international has 67 saves for Manchester United.
