11-Year-Old Ohio Girl Charged With Murder of 2-Month-Old Baby Reportedly Showed No Remorse
An 11-year-old girl in Ohio is being charged with murder for beating a 2-month-old baby to death.
The 11-year-old girl's mother was babysitting the baby girl, Zuri Whitehead, when the beating occurred on Friday, according to The Associated Press.
Police say she showed no remorse during the sentencing.
"I'm not sure she appreciated the gravity of what she did," Wickliffe police Chief Randy Ice said.
The 11-year-old girl took the baby upstairs at around 3 a.m. when her mother fell asleep on a couch downstairs. Less than an hour later, when the mother woke up, the baby was bleeding and had a swollen head.
The mother called police, and baby Zuri was rushed to a children's trauma center in Cleveland where she was pronounced dead.
Zuri's mother, Trina Whitehead, knew the babysitter for over five years although they are not related. Trina Whitehead, mother of three other children, sent her child Zuri to the babysitter's house overnight just to get a break.
Court administrator Chris Simon said the youngest child to commit murder during his career was 13 years old.
The 11-year-old girl is being held at a juvenile detention center since she cannot be tried as an adult. She can be sentenced to a State Department and held up to the age of 21. Her public defender declined to comment.
Latest FBI crime statistics show that there were 20 children age 12 and under who were accused of murder just in the year 2012.
Police Chief Ice is considering counseling for the officers who responded to the call.
"We're having a hard time getting (our) heads around this," he said. "You don't see stuff like this."
The middle school that the young girl went to has called police about her on one occasion that was nonviolent.
The 11-year-old girl and her mother were questioned.
