A new technology called HotelsByDay is beginning to allow travelers to book hotel rooms by the day instead of overnight.

This can be a good thing for travelers who need several hours between meetings to unwind, a place besides a coffee shop to work or a place to relax prior to a late day flight, TechCrunch reports.

The prices of the day stays are up to 40 percent off the prices for overnight stays.

Currently, the service is available as an app on iOS and Android devices and 40 hotels are participating, mostly in Chicago and New York. More cities will be added soon as 60 other hotels have already committed. Look for Philadelphia to join this week and next month Miami, Los Angeles, Boston and Atlanta will jump on board.

The app is simple to use. Travelers select the hotel and timeframe they wish and book the room right from the app. An example of a timeframe would be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Yannis Moati, CEO for HotelsByDay hopes to have 120 hotels offering up rooms by the day in the next three months.

"If you're in the city and you have time to kill or your schedule has changed, and you don't want to work at Starbucks for three or four hours -- what would you rather do than book a hotel?," Moati told TechCrunch. "We want the experience for the consumer to be very quick ... like same-day booking."

The service allows connectivity with hotels in order for the hotels to offer up rooms available by the day and to put a price on them.

In the last few weeks, HotelsByDay has found that travelers have been booking stays of about 5 hours and the average cost has been $110 (plus tax) in Chicago and New York. HotelsByDay takes a 15 percent commission for each stay.

Moati thinks that young travelers will use the service because of its convenience.

"Their schedule doesn't necessarily fit that ... but they would like to book something that fits their time -- something that fits in between meetings, to refresh before a meeting, or to get ready for a flight that leaves later in the day," Moati said.

HotelsByToday is available on the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store.
