'You and I' Singer John Legend Defends Kanye West Interrupting Beck at Grammys 2015, Tells People to 'Relax'
John Legend says Kanye West's interruption at the Grammys was harmless but he does not agree with the rapper's comments about Beck.
Us Weekly reports the "All of me" singer said he thought it was funny when West approached the stage on Feb. 8 after Beck won Album of the Year for "Morning Phase." The rapper went on the stage but immediately left without saying anything.
"I looked at it as just a funny thing that people were going to talk about," Legend said. "It didn't hurt anybody. Anybody who's upset just needs to relax. It was funny."
Legend also praised Beck.
"Beck won his award fair and square. Beck is super talented, and I have several of his albums and I've listened to him for a long time," Legend added. "I think people were surprised that he won, but that doesn't mean he's not deserving, that just means people thought other people were going to win too."
Although West did not say anything about Beck when he approached the stage, after the Grammys he spoke to E! about his win.
"All I know is if the Grammys want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us," he said. "We ain't gonna play with them no more ... Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it. By the way, I got my wife, my daughter and my clothing line, so I'm not going to do nothing to put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity."
West later told TMZ that he was not suggesting that Beck was not a "real artist" when he talked about the Grammys and was not disrespecting Beck when he approached the stage.
Beck thought the "Flawless" singer was going to win the award as well and was not offended by West's interruption.
"I was so excited he was coming up! He deserves to be on that stage," Beck said.
