Actress Jamie Brewer made fashion-show history on Thursday when she became the first model with Down syndrome to step onto the catwalk at New York Fashion Week, USA Today reported.

The 30-year old best known for her roles on "American Horror Story" wore clothing designed by Carrie Hammer during the event at Lightbox, a digital arts and events space in Manhattan.

"Jamie is an absolute star," Hammer said. "(She) has this beautiful figure with a small waist."

The designer put Brewer in black with an A-line cut but insisted she did not merely want to highlight the actress's physical beauty. Brewer is also an accomplished activist for people with intellectual disabilities, Hammer explained.

With her appearance at New York Fashion Week, Brewer was "breaking boundaries and setting an amazing example," E! Online reported. And the actress said she knew how important her achievement would be to others.

"Young girls and even young women (see me) and say, 'Hey, if she can do it, so can I!'" Brewer said. "It's a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to (encourage them to be) who they are and (show) who they are."

Brewer is modeling as part of the "Role Models Not Runway Models" campaign, a project that invites inspiring women to showcase Hammer's work.

"We feature incredible influential women on the runway," the designer noted. "CEOs, executives, activist, actresses -- anyone who is the top of the field, top of their game."

Hammer invited women of different heights, weights and ethnicity, Time detailed. One of the models, Danielle Sheypuk, became the first-ever model in a wheelchair to appear at New York Fashion Week.

But Hammer does not want to focus to be on anybody's disability.

"We were never trying to make a statement," Hammer said. "We don't think of (Sheypuk) as being in a wheelchair. We don't define her that way."

Nevertheless, her message of inclusion "went really viral," the designer said.

"We got hundreds of emails for girls and their moms thanking us."
