Mexico Weddings: Mass Weddings Around the World on a Special Day
Over 1,600 couples were married in a mass Valentine's Day wedding Saturday in Zocalo Square in Mexico City, Global News reported.
Mexico City's largest plaza was filled with a total of 1,609 couples as several different bands played music for the civil ceremony. Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera presided over the mass ceremony urging couples to respect each other.
"May each and every one of the couples here enjoy eternal love," Mancera said as he congratulated the newlyweds.
All wedding fees were waved for Valentine's Day by Mexico City's government.
Over 1,200 police officers were deployed to provide security for the mass wedding, according to the Federal District Public Safety Secretariat.
Nearly 20,000 officers were assigned to patrol locations across Mexico City Saturday as part of "Operation Romeo and Juliet" where public places, plazas and commercial areas get high priority on Valentine's Day.

Other mass weddings for Valentine's Week included a 700-couple civil ceremony in the Philippines, according to the International Business Times.
The event was organized by a government agency on Thursday in Cavite province. The local government provides the wedding venue, food, gifts, pictures and other facilities including the marriage license for low income unmarried residents.
Prisca O. Parsacala, 53, and 49-year-old Carlito A. Magallanes was the oldest couple in the ceremony while the youngest couple was 23-year-old Russel I Hernandez and 18-year-old Joeylyn C. Cambe.
Public weddings also took place on Valentine's Day in the cities of Dasmariñas, Tagaytay and Silang municipality.
A mass wedding was also provided by a social-welfare organization in Rahim Yar Khan, The International News reports.
Over 1,200 guests joined the ceremony to watch 63 couples tie the knot. The social-welfare organization pays for all expenses including the bride and groom's attire.
Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Khursheed Shah, attended the ceremony as chief guest.
