A Santa Clara University student was charged with attempted murder Thursday for stabbing his sleeping roommate in their dorm room, San Jose Mercury News reports.

Dillon Sam Kim is being held without bail at the Santa Clara County Jail. The 19-year-old student did not answer to a plea and will be back Tuesday.

Kim reportedly stabbed his roommate multiple times all over is upper body. The suspect also slashed his own throat before being arrested outside Graham Hall.

Spokeswoman Deepa Arora said Santa Clara University has suspended Kim from the school.

It is not clear what the motive of stabbing the victim was, but Santa Clara police said it was an unprovoked attack.

Deputy District Attorney Kalila Spain said Kim was standing over his 19-year-old roommate at about 3 a.m. on Feb. 17 with a knife then stabbed him in the throat.

Kim continued to slash his roommate in the head and shoulder. The victim broke free and ran toward a bathroom but fell down, and Kim stabbed him in the back. Spain said another student called 911 when the victim ran to the second room.

The defendant surrendered to police before turning the knife on himself.

Campus paramedics were the first to respond to the scene and helped the victim before he was sent to the hospital. He is currently recovering from his wounds.

Spain said, "He's doing well."

Kim had multiple bandages on his left arm when he appeared in court, Bay Area News reports. He also had a long scar across his neck from when he turned the knife on himself.

Sheriff's deputies escorted him back to the Santa Clara County Jail after he answered to an attempted murder charge.

Attorney Emma Bradford who is representing Kim on the case was not immediately available to comment, ABC News reports.

The victim's name was not released.
