Academy award winning actress, Halle Berry recently appeared at the Unite4:Good Unite4:Humanity gala and opened up about her experiences growing up with domestic violence, E! News reports.

Berry, who is an avid volunteer for the Jenesse Center for domestic violence, revealed she witnessed her mother get abused by her husband as a child.

"I'm a victim of domestic violence," Berry said. "I wasn't married to a man that beat me up, but my mother was."

Berry said, at 5 years old, she watched her mother get beaten up "day after day after day." She also recalled her mother getting "kicked down the stairs" and hit in the head with a wine bottle by her husband.

"Knowing that she wanted nothing more then for her little girls to see her be empowered and be a woman of strength, but having no way to make that happen was heartbreaking for me," Berry said.

Because her mother had "no way" of escaping the abuse, she unfortunately stayed with her abusive husband "for way too long," Berry said. "Her children, my sister and I, saw far too much and I've suffered the damage of being a child of domestic violence."

Since her scarring experience with domestic abuse, Berry has gone on to volunteer at the Jenesse center, which is the oldest domestic violence intervention center in Los Angeles.

Berry has been volunteering there for over 15 years and describes the center as "my heart and soul."

Other celebrities were also honored at the gala, including Zendaya, Josh Hutcherson, Christina Applegate, Lauren Parsekian, Amy Poehler, Pink, and Ewan McGregor.

Prior to speaking out on domestic violence, Berry's husband, Olivier Martinez, was involved in a violent altercation with airport employee at LAX last month.

TMZ reports Martinez apparently knocked over an LAX airport employee with an empty car seat for allegedly getting "too close" to him, Berry and their children as they exited the airport from the Tom Bradley International Terminal in Los Angeles, California.

Neither Martinez, Berry nor the children were harmed, but the employee claims he was injured.
