Suicide Squad Cast, News & Release Date: Jay Hernandez Slated to Join Will Smith, Jared Leto & Margot Robbie in Upcoming Comic Book Film
If you were an imprisoned super-villain, what lengths would you go to in exchange for clemency?
Would you risk your life on a dangerous black ops mission to get out of the slammer earlier? Of course you would, if you want to become a member of the bold "Suicide Squad!"
The highly-anticipated comic book movie, starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Joel Kinnaman, has added another member to the cast, Jay Hernandez, according to The Wrap.
"The Friday Night Lights" star Hernandez, who is also known for his roles in "Crazy/Beautiful" alongside Kirsten Dunst, "Hostel," "Carlito's Way: Rise to Power" and "World Trade Center," is reportedly in negotiations to join the cast of the Warner Bros. comic book adaptation.
Hernandez is reportedly playing Chato Santana, the New 52 version of El Diablo.
"Santana has the ability to create and control fire, and is sentenced to Belle Reve prison when he burns down the building of a local gang and accidentally kills the innocent women and children inside. Soon after, he's recruited by Amanda Waller and joins the Suicide Squad."
Hernandez will have "a small, cameo role in the film, as he remains under lock and key in the super-powered wing of Belle Reve. He won't be alone, either, and will reportedly be joined by familiar DC villains Killer Frost, Blockbuster, King Shark, Live Wire, and more."
Hernandez recently co-starred on Fox's "Gang Related" and will soon be seen in Boaz Yakin's "Max," which Warner Bros. is slated to release in August.
"A secret government agency run by Amanda Waller, named A.R.G.U.S creates a task force comprised of super villains. They call it the Suicide Squad because sometimes . . . they don't come back. They are assigned to execute dangerous tasks in exchange for shorter prison sentences."
Which characters will make up the Suicide Squad?
The film, which will be directed by David Ayer, will feature Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
Production starts in April, and Warner Bros. will release "Suicide Squad" on Aug. 5, 2016.
