Though it's been reported the pearl-covered dress worn by Lupita Nyong'o to the Academy Awards has possibly been recovered, the surveillance footage the Los Angeles police have used has not been very helpful.

According to TMZ.com, law enforcement officials have thoroughly examined all the video retrieved from hotel security footage and it offers little in the way of explaining what may have happened to the Calvin Klein-designed garment the "12 Years a Slave" star donned for the glitz-filled evening.

Not only is the footage recovered described as spotty, one source hinted that the person who committed the theft would probably get away with it.

The unknown thief returned the dress to the London West Hollywood Hotel.

"We believe this dress is the dress that was stolen from the London Hotel," said Lt. Michael White, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, according to the LA Times.

The newspaper reports TMZ got an anonymous tip about the dress, which was supposedly returned because the pearls were fake.

Still, investigators are rumored to be considering several theories, including one that the heist may have been an inside job. One source added the dress itself is too "long and stiff" for someone to have worn it out of the hotel over something, but concedes it could have been placed in a hamper or a bag.

In sporting the 6,000 white Akoya-adorned dress, Nyong'o landed on almost every critic's best dressed list for the night, when the Los Angeles Times openly wondering "how can you not be impressed by the workmanship on this pearl palooza?"

Earlier, Nyong'o told reporters of the dress "it was so much fun to create this dress. We talked about it being fluid and liquid. I wanted it to be an homage to the sea."

In a prepared statement, hotel officials said of the theft: "this is a terribly unfortunate situation and we are working with law enforcement on their investigation.
