Pedro Infante Movies: Items From 'Nosotros Los Pobres' & More Movies to be Displayed at Cultural Center Ahead of 58th Anniversary of Death
Perdro Infante, who is one of the most popular singers and actors from Latin America and the Mexican Golden Era of Cinema, will be commemorated with the Pedro Infante National Cultural Center, notes TV Notas.
The center will open on March 1, and items from eight of his films will be on display in Cuajimalpa, Mexico.
Denise Chavez, who wrote the novel "Loving Pedro Infante" in 2002, probably said it best when describing the popularity of the star.
"If you're a [Mexican] and don't know who he is, you should be tied to a hot stove with yucca rope and beaten with sharp dry corn husks as you stand in a vat of soggy fideos," she said, according to Time.
Infante had many roles in the '40s and '50. He not only wowed audiences with his talent, he was also a sex symbol. In 1948, Infante starred in "Nosotros Los Pobres," Mexico's biggest hit in film history.
Lupita Infante, his daughter, explained there will be workshops, lectures, music lessons, dancing and other activities to celebrate her father. The exhibit is just a preface to a bigger celebration coming on April 15, the 58th anniversary of his death.
"This is for the purpose of bringing new generations closer to art and my father's philosophy of being close to the village," Lupita said, according to TV Notas.
"My father was a very beloved man and what's better than a building like this that has his name, so we have planned an exhibition in which various objects and costumes used in some of his films will be shown," she said, adding that "Nosotros Los Pobres," "Ustedes Los Ricos" and "Tizoc" would be represented in the exhibit.
Infante died at 39, and it sent Mexicans into immediate sadness as they clogged the streets and grieved, Time reported.
The Mexican government even declared a day of national mourning for Infante.
Lupita is happy her father is being honored and that others can share stories about him by visiting the special exhibit.
"We are happy with this space, where we could also display this exhibition for the people who so love my father," she said.
