Duke Lacrosse Rape Case Victim: Accuser Crystal Mangum Found Guilty of Murder
In 2006, stripper Crystal Magnum made national headlines when she accused a group of Duke University lacrosse players of rape. Those charges later proved to be false, and Magnum's mental stability was questioned as the case fell apart. Now, Magnum has made national headlines again, and again she's in the news for not-so-noble reasons.
ESPN is reporting that Magnum was found guilty of stabbing her boyfriend, Reginald Daye, to death on April 3, 2011. The jury sentenced her to 14-to-18 years in prison.
According to Magnum's testimony, the stabbing was in "self-defense," and that she merely "poked [Daye] in the side." The convicted child abuser said that Daye was "beating her in a jealous rage." But the prosecuting attorney, Charlene Franks, told the jury that the evidence in the case didn't back up Magnum's claims...and the jury agreed. Daye, who originally survived the attack and died 10 days later from complications, said that Magnum had previously attacked him with a series of knives, repeatedly, before finally stabbing him in the chest.
According to Sports Illustrated, Magnum's false accusations had a series of negative repercussions on the Duke campus: lacrosse coach Mike Pressler was forced to resign, the lacrosse season was canceled, and prosecuting attorney Mike Nifong was disbarred. Magnum was later found to have been intoxicated and high on a series of illegal drugs.
Should Magnum have been jailed back when she accused the Duke University students of rape? Or do you think it was all a big misunderstanding...the rantings of a mentally unstable stripper? Do you believe Magnum's story about "self-defense"? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
