'Independence Day 2' Cast & Plot News: Will Smith Not Returning; Liam Hemsworth & 'Survivor's Remorse' Star Jessie Usher Cast
Director Roland Emmerich revealed on his personal Facebook page Wednesday that Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum and Jessie Usher have signed on for roles in the upcoming movie "Independence Day 2."
Hemsworth is rumored to be cast in the lead role, but no details regarding his character have emerged. Goldblum will repeat his role from the original.
Jessie Usher, the lead of Starz's basketball drama "Survivor's Remorse," has been cast, but for which character is unknown. In the original "Independence Day," Stephen Hiller's girlfriend Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox) had a young son named Dylan (Ross Bagley). The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Usher will star as the son of Smith's character.
Usher currently plays Cam Calloway in the Lebron James-produced Starz series "Survivor's Remorse." Cam is a 20-something basketball player who moves his family to Atlanta, Georgia, after signing his first professional, multimillion-dollar contract. The first season premiered Oct. 4 and did well. Starz quickly signed for a second season, which will air later this year.
While Usher is a rising star, this is not his first film. He stars in TriStar football drama "When the Game Stands Tall," which is scheduled for an August theater release. He made his television debut in 2005 and has starred on a variety of shows, including "Hannah Montana," "Level Up," "The Mentalist" and "Criminal Minds."
Will Smith will not reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller in the sequel.
Cinema Blend reports that the "Independence Day 2" plot is set 20 years later in a world that has finally repaired itself after the initial alien invasion, and has benefited from the technology left behind by the extraterrestrials. What the human race doesn't realize is that the alien invaders from the first movie sent out a distress signal before they were destroyed. Backup soon arrives on earth to the surprise of humankind.
Production is scheduled to begin on "Independence Day 2" in May, but that has not been officially confirmed, according to MovieWeb.
"Independence Day 2" is set for release on June 24, 2016.
