NSA Building Shooting: FBI Arrest Former Corrections Officer Suspected of Series of Shootings in Washington D.C. Area
FBI and local police have arrested a man suspected of causing a series of shootings around the D.C. area. The suspect was arrested after police identified his car and found shell casings and firearm inside.
On Wednesday the FBI announced it had arrested the suspected linked to a spate of shootings in Maryland and the D.C. area, according to NBC News. The latest shooting happened Tuesday afternoon when two men were injured while driving a landscaping truck on the Maryland Intercounty Connector (ICC). Though unsure at the beginning if all the shootings were related, the FBI said in a statement obtained by NBC News that they believe they are.
"We believe the subject responsible for shooting incidents on the ICC, near Fort Meade Army installation and other locations around the Baltimore-Washington metro area in the last two weeks is in custody," the FBI said.
The other shootings, according to NBC Washington, happened in the last week and included the aforementioned incident as well as a shooting later on Tuesday near the National Security Agency's Fort Meade building.
Police arrested Tuesday night Hong Young, 35, of Beltsville, Maryland, and charged him with attempted murder as well as various other charges. The man has no terror-related connections and served as correctional officer until May 2014.
The shooting at the ICC, in which one was wounded by shattered glass and a bullet grazed another, happened at 3 p.m. The shooting at the NSA happened at 6 p.m. However, the first shooting happened on Feb. 24 outside a Costco in Hanover, Maryland. An elderly man refueling his car at a nearby gas station was shot at by an assailant driving a Lincoln Town Car, as police determine from surveillance footage.
On Monday two more shootings happened, one outside a Wal-Mart and another outside a movie theater. Evidence was found at some of the sites and collected by police.
"My investigators worked all night to link these cases forensically," Prince George's Police Chief Mark Magaw said.
At around 10:30 p.m. police on patrol following the shooting found a car that matched the Feb. 24 shooting and found shell casings that matched those at the shooting scenes. They arrested Young.
According to ABC 7, Young has a history of mental illness and is currently being held in a hospital. His family told ABC 7 he had been struggling to find work and was going through a divorce.
