International Women's Day: Shakira Shares Childhood School Photo, Asks Followers to Stand #UpForSchool Campaign [Pic]
For the upcoming International Women's Day, Shakira, among various celebrities and global leaders, shared a photo of herself as kid going to school. The Colombian superstar did it to promote a campaign for girls' education around the world called Stand #UpForSchool.
Taking advantage of the popular social media trend Throwback Thursday, when people post older photos of themselves, Shakira posted a photo on Instagram of her as a young school girl in a school uniform.
She mentioned both International Women’s Day and the #UpForSchool on the caption, writing, “This #TBT is to mark International Women’s Day! Here's a picture of me as a school girl to show solidarity with the 31 million girls around the world denied the right to go to school and fulfill their dreams.”
She is not the only one partaking in the campaign. According to the campaign’s blog post, various celebrities, including British actor Miranda Hart, “Downton Abbey” star Laura Carmichael, and Brandy took part. Politicians like Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah as well as former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
The Stand #UpForSchool’s petition seeks to help the more than 30 million girls around the world who are not in school.
“This International Women’s Day, help make sure the whole world gets the message: girls education matters -- and understands that one girl out of school is one too many,” the petition site explains. It has gathered more than three million signatures.
"We, the world's youth, teachers, parents and global citizens appeal to our governments to keep their promise, made at the United Nations in 2000, to ensure all out-of-school children gain their right to education before the end of 2015,” the site explained, wanting “to bring an end to the barriers preventing girls and boys from going to school” like work, child marriage and war.
“All children deserve the opportunity to learn and achieve their potential,” the site continued. “We are #UpForSchool."
