The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who volunteers information leading to the arrest and conviction of the two men who shot a U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg on Thursday during an attempted armed robbery in Detroit.

The incident occurred around 9:10 p.m. Thursday night when the 55-year-old federal judge was taking his trash cans outside in a city near Seven Mile and Livernois. He was facing the front door of his home when two young men ran up from behind him and tried to force themselves inside of his house. Berg, however, refused to let them in and a brief scuffle ensued. One of the men then fired a shot before they both took off in a dark car.

Fortunately, Berg survived the shooting with a non-life threatening gunshot wound in his leg.

Following the shooting, Detroit police said they believe the shooting had nothing to do with Berg's profession in law enforcement, reports CNN affiliate WDIV.

In 2012, Berg was nominated by President Obama to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The married father of three also spent over 20 years working as an assistant U.S. attorney, specializing in fraud and technology crimes.

In the meantime, the FBI will continue searching for the suspects, who are approximately 18-25 years old, reports The Detroit News.

On Friday, Attorney Barbara McQuade called Berg a hero who protected his family from robbers.

"True to his character, Judge Berg heroically protected his family by refusing to let the robbers inside his home," McQuade told The News.

"He took a bullet in the leg, but possibly spared his family from a worse outcome. All of his friends and former colleagues at the U.S. Attorney's Office are rooting and praying for him for a speedy and full recovery."

Berg's wife, Anita Sevier, expressed sympathy for the robbers who shot her husband.

"I feel badly that somebody felt that they needed to do this. I feel for people that don't have something else to be doing. I'm sorry that this has to happen," she said during an interview with WWJ-AM (950).
