Jodi Arias Trial Update News 2015: Proscuetor Juan Martinez may Have Been Connected to Juror 17 in Death Penalty Case
Although the Jodi Arias sentencing trial has ended, the drama in this saga is never-ending now that questions have been raised surrounding one of the jurors and her connection with the lead prosecutor in the case.
After a five-month retrial, jurors in the high profile murder case deadlocked on Thursday on whether to sentence the convicted killer to death or life in prison for the brutal murder of her lover, Travis Alexander, in 2008. As a result, Arias will automatically receive a prison sentence rather than execution.
According to HLN, the jurors were reportedly split 11 to 1 in favor of the death penalty. Now, new reports revealed the one person who refused to execute Arias, Juror 17, is connected to the lead prosecutor in the case, Juan Martinez.
ABC15 reports that Juror 17, who remains unnamed, is linked to the criminal justice system in Maricopa County through her first husband who has a lengthy criminal history. In addition, her husband was prosecuted by Juan Martinez in two separate cases.
The first case occurred in 1998 before he and juror 17 were married when he was charged with murder and drive-by shooting. The charges were eventually dropped in 2000. However, he also pleaded guilty in a separate burglary case that Martinez prosecuted. As a result, he served a minimal sentence for that charge.
The man is currently serving 25 years in prison for a burglary that ended in a police chase with shots fired back in 2008.
Court records show that the couple filed for divorce in 2010.
These new details about Juror 17's ex-husband, his criminal past and connection to Martinez has sparked questions over whether or not Martinez knew this during the jury selection process.
Other jurors have also revealed Juror 17 admitted to watching a Lifetime movie about Arias' first trial and refused to equally deliberate.
