Madison Police Shooting News Update: African American Teen Shot in Wisconsin Had ADHD and Was Impulsive
New information about the unarmed black teenager who was fatally shot by a cop in Madison, Wisconsin Friday reveals that he suffered from attention deficit disorder and was described by family members as an impulsive risk-taker.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. Friday evening after Madison Officer Matt Kenny got into a confrontation with 19-year-old Tony Terrell Robinson Jr., who was reportedly jumping in and out of traffic.
"The same subject had been responsible for a battery that had recently been committed," according to Madison Police Chief Mike Koval.
Kenny followed Robinson to the residence where the battery allegedly took place. That's where he says Robinson attacked him and he opened fire in self-defense, said Koval, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.
The teenager "assaulted my officer and in the context of mutual combat, the officer did draw his revolver and subsequently shot the subject," Koval said. "The initial finds at the scene did not reflect a gun or anything of that nature."
According to court documents, Robinson was diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety and depression, and was prone to boredom and anger. He was also convicted of armed robbery in April 2014 and was serving a three-year probation, reports The Associated Press.
A criminal complaint in the armed robbery states Robinson was with five other people who staged a home invasion robbery in Madison. After Robinson was captured by police, he admitted that he was carrying a BB-gun pistol during the robbery and that he stole a TV and an Xbox 360 from the apartment.
The robbery case file includes a letter from his grandmother, Sharon Irwin, who asked the judge for mercy because he is impulsive.
"He didn't want to go yet did it anyway," she wrote. "That is one of his issues. Impulsive. The other is being a follower."
His aunt also wrote a note to the judge, saying that Robinson grew up poor in poverty without his father, and that he was a "kind-hearted, incredibly intelligent young man with hopes and dreams to become successful and to move forward in life."
More information has also been uncovered about Officer Kenny, a 12-year veteran, including the fact that the 45-year-old white cop was also exonerated in a 2007 shooting, reports ABC News.
The state Justice Department's Division of Criminal Investigation is currently investigating the shooting, but a final report is not expected for weeks.
