PBS Delves into the Dramatic Lives of Latina Voiceover Artists Who Dub "Desperate Housewives" in Spanish for the U.S. Audience
With a growing Latino population in the U.S., there is also a need for more dubbing of American TV shows on major networks in Spanish -- that's where Latina voiceover artists come in, but it isn't easy.
It's a tough job to land voiceover gigs as it would be for any other actress to land an acting gig in Hollywood, and, yes, there is also drama!
VOCES, Latino Public Broadcasting's arts and culture series on PBS, is taking a "fascinating look at a rarely seen side of Hollywood" with "Now en Español" that follows the trials and tribulations of five hard-working Latina actresses who dub "Desperate Housewives" for Spanish language audiences in the U.S.
"With real lives that are often as dramatic and desperate as those of their onscreen counterparts, the five dynamic women featured in 'Now en Español' struggle to pursue their Hollywood dreams while balancing the responsibilities of paying rent and raising children," according to PBS.
The movie documents the lives of these very different women while they chase the dream of big time stardom as they audition for parts and dub studio work.
Latina filmmaker Andrea Meller captured the lives of these dedicated and passionate women over the course of several years through her lens. The Latina voiceover actresses, on which the film is based, include Marcela Bordes, Marabina Jaimes, Natasha Perez, Ivette Gonzalez and Gabriela Lopetegui. Like many other aspiring Latina actresses, these women are pursuing their dreams in Hollywood against all odds.
"'Now en Español' offers an inside look at the challenges faced by many Latino actors while offering a warm and engaging portrait of five gutsy women as they follow their dreams against all odds."
"Now en Español" on PBS's VOCES, premieres on Friday, April 24 at 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET (check local listings).
